Information on the building of the Foreign Office
The Federal Foreign Office returned to Berlin in the autumn of 1999, following the completion of its new headquarters. With the “Haus am Werderschen Markt” it is moving into a building in Berlin which is unusual from both the architectural and the historical standpoint. Hardly any other building in Berlin has experienced the low points and high points of recent German history as this building has. It was built from 1934 to 1940 as an extension to the Reichsbank; Nazi economic policy and the financing of the Second World War were co-authored from these rooms. As the seat of the SED Central Committee, it was later the control centre of the GDR for three decades. But the first freely elected Volkskammer of the GDR also met here in the “Haus am Werderschen Markt”, where it approved the Treaty on the Establishment of German Unity. © Auswärtiges Amt
