Description

The seminar ‘Sustainable tourism cooperation as an economic driver and platform for cultural exchange’ provides insights on how to improve a sustainable development in the Baltic Sea region. It highlights best practice approaches on macro-regional, regional and local level and stimulates the exchange of stakeholder on border transgressing cooperation after 2020.

 

Three interventions of dedicated experts will kick off the seminar, providing a glimpse on:

1. the development process of the EUSBSR Flagship ‘Baltic Sea Tourism Center’ by demonstrating the capacity and benefits of transregional tourism cooperation. The presentation should captivate interested organizations and institutions to become part of joint activities like the annual Baltic Sea Tourism Forum, the BSTC Tourism Market Monitor^® or a planned BSTC flagship process under the EUSBSR for sustainable tourism development in the Baltic Sea region.
2. how the Swedish Region Västerbotten Turism became a knowledge-based organisation on sustainability for local destination management organisations and tourism businesses. The intervention focusses on lessons learnt implementing sustainable tourism as a regional political organisation. Large city hotels, museums, dog sled companies, fishing providers, cuisines, ski slopes, travel agents etc. have been inspected and a considerable number of local destinations, municipalities and service providers have been assessed. The assessment was based on the criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) – managing the global standards for sustainable travel and tourism. Weave links between the private and public sector and an increased quality of life for local people are first tangible achievements of the implemented process.
3. Sustainable tourism development in the cities of Tallinn and Helsinki based on the experiences gained in the NATTOURS project (funded by INTERREG Central Baltic Programme). The keynote focuses on how the NATTOURS project has approached sustainable tourism development, what kind of tools and measures have been utilized and how these contribute to the protection of natural and cultural heritage in the two cities. Explanations of specific examples from the project will be given, e.g. creating access to urban nature routes; developing new ICT solutions; conclusions drawn from visitor studies conducted in both cities.

A subsequent and moderated discussion will activate all participants of the seminar to discuss needs and requirements for sustainable tourism cooperation post 2020.

The seminar is strongly encouraged by Policy Area Tourism of the EUSBSR.
