Description

Under the Paris Agreement, governments agreed to keep the rise in the global average temperature below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, aiming to limit it to 1.5°C. According to the UNFCCC, the contributions of the Paris Agreement Signatories will not be sufficient to keep the temperature below 2°C. Emissions from most EU sectors have generally been declining since 1990, but those from the transport sector have not: significantly more greenhouse gases are currently being emitted than in 1990, with the trend rising again in 2014 and 2015 due to higher demand for transport linked to the economic recovery. The transport sector contributes around one-third of the EU’s annual GHG emissions. As such, the sector must take additional measures to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Keynote speakers will address the current state of play in the EU transport sector’s responses to the challenges posed by new goals for GHG mitigation and will discuss how to improve cross-border and transnational cooperation on adaptation and how to increase the resilience of the sector to risks related to climate change.

The seminar will contribute to the EUSBSR Annual Forum discussions on ‘After 2020’ by discussing opportunities and proposing ideas on how to further mainstream mitigation and adaptation within the EUSBSR and how to finance integrated climate actions in EU MFF post-2020. It will also contribute to the AF main theme Marine Environment as low-carbon transport in the BSR has a less negative impact on the Baltic Sea environment.
