Climate Challenges for Energy Supply

Time:       13th June, 17.00-18.30
Venue:     Lesehof/library

Description:
Climate is changing and critical infrastructure including power plants and electricity grid are particularly vulnerable in the Baltic Sea Region. Power blackouts affect severely people’s wellbeing and economy including the provision of vital services. Seminar aims to address key problems caused by the climate change to energy supply and seeks answers how climate resilient technology and improved interconnections ensure affordable and secure supply of carbon neutral energy to the Baltic Sea Region.

Elaboration:

The impacts of climate change on the Baltic Sea region ecosystem can be particularly severe due to its location, the cold climate and the vulnerability of the natural environment. Major changes are expected to affect the hydrology and biology of the region. Some sectors are particularly vulnerable, such as critical infrastructure including power plants and electricity grid. The work and achievements of regional cooperation in the energy sector in the Baltic Sea region is conducted within the framework of the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan initiative (BEMIP). The MoU signed 8 June 2015 is forming a common Action Plan for the BEMIP initiative and the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region in Energy policy implementation. EUSBSR  Policy Area (PA) Energy, PA Secure and Horizontal Action Climate coordinators together with Baltic Development Forum representing businesses in BSR, aim to facilitating integrative cross-sectorial policy discussions and alignment of policies in the Baltic Sea region countries, including mainstreaming of climate change mitigation and adaptation into relevant sectoral policies. Regional cooperation in creating and empowering the EU climate and energy policy development and implementation is critical for ensuring secure energy supply, utilisation of the full potential of renewable energy sources and achieving energy efficiency goals. The seminar will address complex challenges and opportunities introduced by the climate changes to the energy security and affordability as well different aspects of critical infrastructure resilience to changing climate.
