PRESTO - Project on Reduction of the Eutrophication of the Baltic Sea Today

The aim of the project was to improve water quality along River Daugava and River Neman and the Baltic Sea by improving municipal wastewater treatment with technical studies and concrete investments as well as by increasing human competence.

This was achieved by implementing low-cost, high-impact pilot investments on nutrient removal in three municipal WWTPs in Belarus (Grodno, Molodezhno, Vitebsk) and by further developing the process in Latvian (Daugavpils) and Lithuanina (Kaunas) WWTPs. The project developed educational courses and materials for three Belarusian technical universities and workshops for operative, administrative and educational experts on modern waste water treatment technologies. The project also organized forums aiming at exchange of information between the authorities, decision makers and other relevant actors about the tools and legislation needed to improve water quality in Baltic Sea Region. The project also promoted good practices in nutrient removal and sustainable sludge handling.
